Protea Banks & Aliwal Shoal:
|
|
ibiscus South Coast hosts some of the best scuba diving sites to be found. Generally autumn & winter provides the best conditions for a dive expedition as calm seas and excellent visibility truly portrays the magnitude of this whimsical wonderland.
Ranked amongst the top shark & gamefish dives in the world Protea Banks is most certainly not short of excitement and a definite must. Situated 7.5km straight out to sea from Shelly Beach these sites incorporate a range of caves, pinnacles, ridges and amphitheatres. The reef lies between 27m and 40m, and is approximately 6km long and 800 meters in width. It has been a favourite dive spot since 1991 when it was first recognised as a prime dive site.
Further north towards Durban the Aliwal Shoal, approximately 5km offshore from Umkomaas, are one of the most well known sites on the KwaZulu Natal coastline. The main attraction being Ragged Tooth Sharks, the best area to spot them is at the Cathedral, which is a 4m arch of rock.
Sodwana:
The reefs of
Sodwana are composed of ridges and gullies with pinnacles and drop-offs at some
sites. As Africa's southernmost coral reefs, Sodwana hosts diverse biological
communities and divers can see both tropical species and species adapted to
cooler water.
The coral carpets are composed of brightly coloured soft corals, fragile hard
corals and support more than 800 species of fish and all kinds of other marine
creatures from nudibranchs to mantis shrimps. Soft corals such as mushroom,
leather and thistle corals dominate reef crests whereas gullies are
characterized by hard corals such as staghorn, honeycomb and plate corals.
The underwater landscape of deeper reefs are characterized by large vase and cup
sponges, colourful sea fans, sea whips and black corals. The green coral trees
provide homes for distinct communities of fishes and other animals. Larger reef
inhabitants include ragged tooth sharks, leatherback, loggerhead and green
turtles, moray eels and many kinds of rays.

Safety Tips For Swimmers
The following safety tips have been provided by the lifesavers who patrol the main swimming beaches along the coast.
· When arriving at the beach it is important to look out for the lifeguards and to ascertain whether they are on duty - lifesavers wear red and yellow clothing thus being easily recognisable in summer crowds.
· Make sure you know the local beach conditions - tides, channels, winds and breakers as well as rocky outcrops.
· The lifesaver's instructions must be obeyed and one should bathe between the red and the yellow beach beacons.
· Do not bathe at untended water areas and not alone or at night or dawn as this can be the cause of drowning accidents.
· If you are not a strong swimmer, it is advisable that you do not enter the water further than knee deep and all swimmers must swim in line with the shore, making sure you do not have to swim far if you get tired.
· Young children should be watched at all times and it is advisable that they are under the supervision of responsible adults.
· Do not swim near pipes, rocks, breakwaters or piers and it is important to know what is below the surface - if in doubt don't dive.
· Don't swim directly after eating, or if you have been drinking alcohol - remember, "drinkers are sinkers"!
